Home Educator Experience Days

Enjoy hands-on workshops, climb inside tanks, and dress up in uniforms with our Education Team on selected days.

Sessions are run throughout the year and have a different theme each time. Choose between a morning session at 10:15-12:00 or an afternoon session at 12:45-14:30. Costs are all inclusive and there are no additional entrance fees. Each session is capacity capped so you and your family will have a very personal experience.

DATES & THEMES

These workshops look at the science behind tanks. Using model tanks of “Hobart’s Funnies,” children will use their problem-solving skills to find out how tanks were adapted to face the challenges of a beach landing and even make them float! They will also have a go at assembling a 1:4 model of a Sherman tank; assembling the tank from several key parts such as the hull, turret, guns, sprockets and suspension.

Recommended for children aged 7-15

Grab your map and get ready for a worldwide mission! Discover which countries joined World War Two, track the action across giant maps, and see how battles shifted the front line from nation to nation. Then get up close to real wartime tanks and uncover how they were cleverly adapted to tackle different landscapes, climates and missions.

Recommended for children aged 8-15

Calling all curious inventors! Discover the amazing science behind the very first tanks and find out about the brilliant minds who designed them. Climb inside our mighty Mark IV First World War tank, explore the brand-new Age of Experimentation exhibition, and put your own ideas to the test. Build a fascine, create an action-packed battlefield scene for a zoetrope, and see your design spring to life!

Recommended for children aged 5-15

Think you can spot movie magic from the real thing? Put famous tank films to the test as you investigate what is authentic, what is exaggerated and what is pure Hollywood. Get face-to-face with real screen-used vehicles, including tanks featured in Fury, then step into the director’s seat to storyboard your own action sequence and pitch a tank film built for the big screen.

Recommended for children aged 8-15

Go behind the scenes at our Vehicle Conservation Centre and discover how our experts keep historic vehicles in top condition! Get hands-on with real objects from the past, try your skills at restoration and help clean the mighty machines in our collection. To top it all off, climb aboard for an unforgettable ride in a tracked vehicle!

Go beyond the familiar stories of war and uncover the people whose courage and experiences have often been overlooked. TERMS AND CONDITIONS

We want as many children as possible to access these activities, so we prefer not to exceed a 1:1 ratio for adults to children.

We will require at least one adult to every four children if booking as a group.

We welcome large home educator groups, but we ask that you book in the same way as individual home educators.

Payment must be made at the time of booking by credit or debit card. We cannot send invoices, even for larger groups or organisations.

Bookings are non-transferable and non-refundable.

While our sessions are designed to capture the imagination of a wide audience, younger and older children may find the content less engaging, leading to restless behaviour that can disrupt the enjoyment of others. Please consider when booking sessions for children of varying ages.

Tickets will be taken off sale 72 hours prior to each event.
