The Tank Museum is launching an appeal to find a photograph of Corporal Stanley Harold Way.
Gunner Stanley Way served in the 8th Battalion Tank Corps. In March 1918 he received the Military Medal for delivering messages on foot whilst under sustained bombardment.
His Military Cross citation said, ‘For gallantry and devotion to duty throughout the actions against Doignes and Barastre on 21st and 24th March 1918. This gunner has acted as runner and has carried orders and messages to Company HQ, frequently under extremely heavy shell fire. While working as a runner he has always shown great coolness and disregard for danger and has never failed to deliver his messages.’
Along with his medal, Way also received this Certificate of Commendation from the Commander of The Tank Corps, Major General Hugh Elles.
‘I have read with great pleasure the Report of your Commanding Officer on your consistent good work and coolness in action against the enemy from 21st to 24th March 1918. This reflects credit on yourself and on the whole Tank Corps.’
