Major General Martin Rutledge CB OBE MA

It is with great sadness we share news of the death of our Trustee Major General Martin Rutledge.

Joining the British Army in 1976, Martin was commissioned into the 9th/12th Royal Lancers, commanding the Regiment in 1994-96. He was appointed Director of the Royal Armoured Corps in 2002, serving as a Trustee of The Tank Museum from February 2002 to December 2005.

After a number of other senior appointments Martin retired from the Army as a Major General in 2012 and became Chief Executive of the Army Benevolent Fund (The Soldiers’ Charity), overseeing a substantial grant programme for service personnel, their families, and individual charities.

Martin rejoined The Tank Museum Board of Trustees in June 2023, becoming Chair of the Collections Committee in October, an appointment he only recently relinquished. We are privileged to count ourselves among the many charities and organisations which benefited from his passion and expertise.

Martin Rutledge will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with his wife, Hetty, and his family at this sad time.
