The launch of a new book in collaboration with former tank commander, Hamish de Bretton-Gordon OBE.
Set for publication in June 2026, Tank Command looks at how the tank has shaped modern warfare, from its origins on the battlefields of the First World War to its continued relevance in today’s conflicts.
Hamish de Bretton-Gordon discusses the characters behind the machines, from the crews who fought in early Mark IV tanks at Cambrai to those operating modern Challenger 2 vehicles. He also shares how the tank has continually adapted to meet new challenges, maintaining its role as one of the most reliable and formidable tools on the battlefield despite rapid technological change.
Lucy McCalister, Marketing and Communications Manager, said: “We are thrilled to launch this gripping and unique account of the evolution of tank warfare.
“Drawing upon Hamish’s 23 years’ service as a tank commander, Tank Command brings together personal insight as well as historical analysis and is a must-have for anyone with an interest in military history.”
Hamish will be taking to The Tank Museum’s lecture stage during TANKFEST (26–28 June 2026) to talk about Tank Command. He will also explore how tanks have developed from the First World War to modern conflicts, including the Gulf War (where he served) and today’s Russian and Ukrainian frontlines.
