The Tank Museum has learned that it will be able to reopen to the public from 17 May, as part of the government’s four-step plan to lift the national lockdown.
This week’s announcement placed indoor attractions and museums in Step Three, disappointing many in the sector who hoped museums may open in April in Step Two alongside “non-essential retail”.
Museum spokesman Nik Wyness said: “As there had been no evidence of COVID transmission at any museum or indoor attraction, we would have preferred to open our doors much sooner.
“But public health comes first, and nobody wants to see a resurgence in the virus or a return to lockdown.”
The plan suggests that dates could be pushed back should scientific conditions not be met for this or earlier steps.
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely, but will be prepared to open our doors with all our COVID Safe controls in place, the very day we have permission to so,” he said.
Visitors in May will be the first to see the Museum’s redeveloped World War Two hall, inside which a fascinating new exhibition will be fully installed.
The Museum has already announced that Tiger Day 15 is postponed from April until 24 July, and TANKFEST from June until 17-21 September, for which detailed planning is underway to ensure visitor safety. Find out more here.
