Albert Todd volunteered with the 8th Battalion East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) after the outbreak of the First World War. He arrived in France on the 1st September 1915 and saw his first major action at the Battle of Loos later that month, where the regiment suffered heavy casualties. They would then go on to fight at the Somme in 1916.
Albert appears to have transferred to the Tank Corps in January 1917, joining C Battalion on its formation from the Heavy Branch Machine Gun Corps. Later that year, he was awarded the Military Medal for his brave action at the Battle of Cambrai, saving the lives of his crew.
His Military Medal citation said,
‘On November 23rd 1917, during the attack on La Fontaine, when his tank was set on fire by a direct hit, this man showed the greatest pluck and coolness in helping to extinguish the fire.’
‘When he himself and five more of his crew were wounded, he ran 400 yards under intense machine-gun and artillery fire to obtain assistance from another tank, thereby saving the lives of his comrades.’
